Flores Highlights

To the west of Flores is the town of Labuan Bajo and the Komodo National Park which, in addition to its spectacular dives, has paradisiacal beaches and landscapes. From the famous Komodo dragons (largest lizards in the world) to the pink sand beaches of Padar, from the caves of Rangko and Batu Cermin to Cunca waterfall, without forgetting the mind blowing sunsets on the heights of the city; Labuan Bajo offers a multitude of activities, for both divers and non-divers!

The town of Ruteng is located 3 hours’ drive from Labuan Bajo. Although the city itself does not have any particular charm, the surroundings are worth visiting. For history and archeology lovers, Liang Bua Cave (Caves of the Hobbits) is a must stop. You can also enjoy the nature and surrounding landscapes with the spider web-shaped fields of Cancar or the lake of Rana Mese.

In the south of Ruteng, you will find one of the must-see traditional villages of Flores, Wae Rebo. After a 2.5-hours hike in a lush forest, you will discover this village isolated from the world, in the middle of the mountains and with an exceptional panorama!

Located 1200 meters above sea level, equidistant from Labuan Bajo and Maumere, is the small town of Bajawa. Surrounded by volcanoes, mountains, hot springs and waterfalls, the region is a true paradise for nature and trekking lovers. Near Bajawa are several traditional villages (Bena and Tololela, among others) where you will certainly have the chance to come across village women weaving sarongs.

The village of Riung is located 70 km from Bajawa, on the north coast of Flores. Still relatively little visited, given the poor condition of the road to get there, this peaceful place will nevertheless reward the bravest with its charm, the beauty of its famous 17 islands and the clarity of its waters!

Maumere and its surroundings, in addition to its nature and its exceptional dives, is an extremely culturally rich region. You will be able to witness the traditional weaving process as well as the production of the local alcohol, the Moke. A 2.5-hours’ drive from Maumere is one of the most visited places in Flores, the 3 color-changing lakes of the Kelimutu volcano. The area offers the possibility of organizing different day trips: the ascent of the active volcano Egon, a relaxing day on the magnificent beach of Koka or camping on one of the beaches of the bay’s many islands, there is something for everyone!
